How to Get More Google Reviews for Your Restaurant

Guests read Google reviews before trying a new restaurant. Not some guests. Most guests. A 2025 study found that 87% of consumers check online reviews before visiting a local business for the first time, and Google is the platform they check first. Your star rating and review count are, for many potential guests, more important than your website or your Instagram page.

The frustrating reality is that the guests most likely to leave a review are the ones who had a bad experience. Happy guests go home and tell their friends verbally. Unhappy guests go home and type a review. The solution is not to make everyone unhappy. It is to build a systematic process for asking satisfied guests to share their experience publicly.

Why most restaurants get too few reviews

The main reason restaurants have fewer reviews than they deserve is timing and friction. Asking a guest if they enjoyed their meal as they pay the bill, hoping they remember to Google you when they get home, is not a system. It is an aspiration.

Guests who intend to leave a review and never do are not lazy. They open their phone, search for your restaurant, and the Google review flow requires navigating to your Business Profile, clicking "Write a review", logging into Google if they are not already, and writing something. Each step loses a percentage. By the time they would write the review, they are watching TV and have forgotten.

The right moment to ask

The best moment to ask for a review is when the experience is freshest and the guest is happiest. For most restaurants, this is shortly after the meal ends, before the guest leaves or shortly after. Not three days later via email when the emotional warmth of the experience has faded.

If you use Plattr's booking system, you can configure a post-visit follow-up message sent 2-4 hours after the reservation end time. A simple: "Thank you for visiting tonight. If you enjoyed your evening, we'd love a Google review — it helps other guests find us." With a direct link to your Google review page. This one change alone consistently doubles or triples review volume for restaurants that implement it.

Make leaving a review frictionless

Every extra step between intention and action loses people. Your direct Google review link removes navigation friction: one tap and the review form is open. Get your direct review link from Google Business Profile Manager (it's in the "Get more reviews" section). This URL can go into your post-visit email, your booking confirmation, and a QR code at the table.

A QR code on your receipt or table tent that links directly to your Google review page works well for dine-in guests who want to act while they are still at the table. Add a simple message: "Enjoyed your meal? We'd love to hear from you on Google." Nothing pushy. Just a clear path for guests who are already inclined to leave feedback.

Google Business Profile optimisation first

Before generating more reviews, make sure your Google Business Profile is complete. An incomplete profile with 200 reviews ranks lower than a complete profile with 80 reviews. Fill in every field: hours, cuisine type, price range, outdoor seating, reservations, menu link. Add your Plattr Guide URL as your menu link.

Our detailed guide to Google Business optimization for restaurants covers every field and how to use the posts feature to keep your listing fresh. Do this first. Reviews will then appear on a profile that actually converts browsers into guests.

Responding to reviews

Responding to reviews signals to Google that you are an active business. It also signals to potential guests that you care about feedback. Respond to every review, positive and negative. Positive responses can be brief: "Thank you, Maria! We're glad you enjoyed the carbonara. Hope to see you again soon." They should be personal enough to seem human, not template-copied.

Negative reviews require more care. Thank the reviewer for their feedback. Acknowledge their experience without getting defensive. Offer to resolve it (a direct email or phone number to contact you). Do not argue. Other potential guests reading the exchange will form a view of your restaurant based on how you handle criticism, not just on the original complaint.

Using loyalty and bookings to generate reviews

Your loyalty program members are your most engaged guests. They visit regularly and care about your restaurant. A campaign targeting loyalty members with a reminder that reviews help you grow, and a direct link to your Google review page, will generate more reviews per recipient than any cold outreach.

Combine this with your email marketing. A quarterly email to your full guest list — "if you've been in recently and enjoyed it, a quick Google review means the world to us" — is gentle, honest, and effective. Guests who feel a connection to your restaurant want to support you. You just need to give them an easy way to do it.

What not to do

Do not buy fake reviews. Google's detection has improved significantly and penalties are real, including complete listing suspension. Do not offer discounts or incentives in exchange for reviews; this violates Google's policies. Do not ask staff to write reviews. Do not gate negative feedback (only sending the review link to guests who rated you positively in an internal survey) — this also violates platform policies.

Everything in this guide is legitimate, policy-compliant, and sustainable. The restaurants with 500 four-star reviews built that over years of consistently asking and making it easy. There is no shortcut. There is just a system.
