QR Codes for Restaurants — The Complete Guide to Every Use Case

QR codes went from novelty to infrastructure during 2020 and never looked back. What started as a contactless menu solution became a standard tool for restaurants that understand digital-physical integration. The QR code is now a restaurant's most versatile data-collection and customer-service tool — if you know all the ways to use it.

Most restaurants only use QR codes for one thing: replacing the printed menu. That is the least interesting application.

Person scanning QR code at restaurant table with phone

Use case 1: Digital menu display

A QR code on the table links to your digital menu. Guests scan, browse the full menu with photos, prices, allergen info, and dietary labels. No printing, no laminating, no outdated paper menus with crossed-out items. In Plattr, your digital menu is live — update it in the dashboard and it reflects immediately at every table. Print the QR code once, laminate it, and your menu infrastructure is sorted for the year.

Use case 2: Swipe Menu — the visual version

Plattr's Swipe Menu is a TikTok-style vertical scroll menu where each dish gets its own card with a photo, name, price, and description. You can have two QR codes: one linking to the standard list menu and one to the Swipe Menu. The Swipe Menu works exceptionally well for drinks and desserts, where visual appeal drives decisions.

Use case 3: Table ordering

On the Plus plan, Plattr supports QR table ordering. Guests scan, browse the menu, and place orders directly from their phone. Orders appear in your kitchen display. Guests can add items throughout the meal without flagging a server. The second drink, the extra side, the dessert they almost skipped — table ordering captures those items. Average check size goes up without additional server workload. This directly connects to the approach in our guide on increasing revenue without more covers.

Use case 4: Loyalty card enrolment

Put a QR code at the bottom of the receipt or in a small card on the table. Guests scan it and sign up for your Plattr Bonus Card in 30 seconds. Their loyalty card is created immediately. This is one of the highest-ROI uses of a QR code. Every guest who signs up for loyalty becomes trackable — you know when they came, how often they return, and when they stop coming.

Use case 5: Table booking

A QR code in your window linking to your Plattr booking page turns offline discovery into online reservations. Someone walks past your restaurant, likes the look of it, scans the code, and books a table for next Friday. No phone call required. This also works on your printed menus — add a small QR at the bottom with "Book your next visit" text.

Use case 6: WiFi access with data capture

Some restaurants use a QR code to provide WiFi access. Guests scan, enter their email to get the password, and they are connected. You have captured their email with their consent. This feeds into your guest data collection strategy and connects to Plattr CRM for future marketing.

Use case 7: Event booking

Running a wine evening or a chef's table? Create a Plattr event page and generate a QR code for it. Put the QR on posters and your front door. Guests who scan are taken directly to the event booking page. Event QR codes can be printed for specific events and retired afterward. See our guide on event booking and private dining for how to set up the full flow.

Use case 8: Feedback and reviews

A QR code on the receipt linking to your Google review page is one of the most effective ways to increase review volume. Guests who scan after a meal are already in wrap-up mode. In Plattr's reputation monitoring setup, you can track review trends over time and correlate them with specific menu changes or events.

QR codes for multi-language menus

If you serve a tourist-heavy area or have a multi-cultural regular base, a QR code can link to your menu in multiple languages. Plattr's AI menu translation can produce your menu in German, English, French, Spanish, and Italian from a single source. The QR code links to the translated version the guest needs. No reprinting required when you add a language.

Physical placement strategy

Table-top codes work best as small laminated stands. Window codes need to be large enough to scan from the street — at least A5, ideally A4. Receipt codes work as small printed additions to your existing receipt footer. Each code should have a clear label explaining what it does. Unlabelled QR codes get ignored.

For multi-location restaurants, each location needs its own set of codes pointing to location-specific pages. Plattr's multi-location management system handles this automatically — each branch has separate QR codes generated in its dashboard.

Tracking which QR codes get scanned

Not all QR codes perform equally. The table menu QR gets scanned by almost everyone. The window booking QR gets scanned by a smaller fraction of people who walk past. Tracking scan rates helps you understand which placements are working. Plattr's Insights Hub shows you QR scan data alongside your other metrics. If your window QR has never been scanned, the size or placement is wrong — not the concept.
